Our pet dogs and cats by ancestry and nature are raw food carnivore hunters. Our canines fall into the more exact category of raw food omnivores because they eat grasses, vegetables and berries in addition to prey. Our feline friends are true or “obligate” carnivores, being meat only hunters of small rodents and birds. Our feeding of raw pet food can reflect that biology.

Despite thousands of years of evolution and domestication, the digestive system of our four-legged companions has remained the same. The intestinal tract of dogs is very short and best suited for digestion of raw pet foods.

It is often heard that many conventional veterinarians have recommended against using a raw pet food diet for our dogs and cats, and their nervous guardian clients feel anxious going against such advice.

Part of the argument against raw pet food diets is concern about salmonella and E. coli, but many years of study and observed practice has not shown this to be a factor.

Canine and feline digestive systems are naturally designed to digest raw meat.

Infection can occur from poorly handled raw meat, soil or feces, and parasites from wild prey and game meats.  Many veterinarians do advise and are supportive of a raw pet food diet, and raw pet diets have been recommended by European veterinarians as a common practice for decades.

Raw pet food diets have been shown to help the natural defenses against many common ailments such as hot spots, flea infestations, continual shedding, allergies, inflammatory bowel disease, gastrointestinal problems, gum problems, dental disease, immune disorders and degenerative diseases.

Fresh raw food in your pet’s diet supplies more available nutrients to the digestive system that, in turn, help build immune strength, hasten healing from illness, and ward off disease in our dogs and cats.

In the United States, a long term medical study was conducted by Francis M. Pottenger, Jr., M.D., between 1932 and 1942 that by coincidence showed very convincing evidence in support of the raw pet food diet. Dr. Pottenger noted in great detail that over many generations cats fed a diet of heat processed foods were nutritionally deficient and suffered ailments ranging from irritability, low immunity, skeletal deformation, organ malfunction, poor development, low birth weight, allergies, birth defects, infertility and shortened life spans. In contrast, cats in the study group fed a raw diet showed distinct health improvements after being switched from a previous diet of cooked processed food. There are exceptions where a raw diet would not necessarily be better, and that would be in the case of some pets with certain gastrointestinal difficulties, and some of our older and weaker pets that may be unable to tolerate a raw food diet. However, these pets would still be better served by a home cooked versus processed food diet.

Under ideal circumstances, our pets would be given an all raw diet consisting of organic, hormone- and antibiotic-free internal organ meat of the thorax or abdomen; when removed from a butchered animal, known collectively as offal and bones. The more raw food that comprises our pets’ diet the better, but some is preferred over none. You can feed raw chicken, chicken backs, and turkey necks. Raw poultry bones do not splinter. You can combine kibble in a half and half mix with raw ingredients, or alternate days of a raw diet.

A raw diet for our canine and feline pets is a very good way to clean and maintain teeth, exercise jaws and provide a natural source for calcium and phosphorus.

Changing an existing pet diet to a raw diet may create a constipation or diarrhea condition while the digestion system adjusts to the new experience. For this reason, it’s advisable to introduce a raw food diet slowly and in small amounts. Part of the transitioning should involve the grinding and/or crushing of the raw bones prior to serving until the pet becomes accustomed to the transition. Bones should always be ground for our cats.

The feeding of raw pet food is natural and an easy transition to make.

Ground bones do not have the same teeth cleaning properties; however, for animals with apparent delicate digestive systems this would be very advisable. It is important to go slowly on a transition to a raw diet. In the long run, a raw pet food diet is essentially a detoxification that will lead to better vitality and health, and lengthened life spans. Raw pet food of high quality is readily available and even deliverable to your residence.
